The Beginning of Flookup

The story of Flookup began during my tenure at a government parastatal in Africa. At the time, my team and I frequently found ourselves overwhelmed by the task of manually cleaning and reconciling massive datasets. We were constantly searching for ways to streamline this process and that is when I began to explore the potential of fuzzy matching.

Initially, I experimented with VLOOKUP and other built-in Google Sheets functions, but I soon realised that they were simply not powerful or flexible enough to handle the complexities of our data. I needed something more robust, something that could identify similarities even when there were typos or slight variations in the text.

So, in the end, I decided to develop the initial version of Flookup, basing it on the n-gram algorithm.
Upon its release as an add-on, Flookup reduced our task time to just 30 minutes and our error rate consistently remained below 1 per cent thereafter. The significant benefits Flookup brought to our team's performance compelled me to share it with the world as our first public product, thus marking the birth of Flookup for Google Sheets.
